This is a gas chamber

Jewish people were taken to concentration camps where they were starved of food and where they caught diseases. Before the Jews were killed, the German army made the people work as slaves. Men, women and children were taken to these gas chambers to be killed because of their religion.

The crime of killing people in gas chambers and making them work as slaves was named the 'Holocaust'.

Anne Frank was a child that was killed in a concentration camp. She hid away from the German army for two years.
She made a diary of the war time.

What happened to the children in the war?

  • Children left home as evacuees and they went to live with people in the country side.
  • They went to school as usual, but they also learnt what they should do if there was an air raid. Also, they would of learnt of learnt how to put on a gas mask.
  • Night time was quite scary for the children because they had to sleep in an air raid shelter and they never knew when a bomb would drop. Also the shelters were very small and a lot of children had to sleep in them.
  • There were not many celebrating days, such as birthdays and Christmas. They didn't even get sweets.
